Burn Equipment
The NFPBA has an equipment trailer stocked with tools to assist in your prescribed burns however, you may wish to have some useful tools of your own:
Suggested personal protective equipment (PPE)
Protective items and clothing
Shirts and/or coveralls should be made of fire retarding Nomex
Nomex pants are recommended however, canvas, cotton, and denim are worn by some volunteers. Polyesters don’t work with embers and fire.
A good leather shoe (lace up 8”)
Mask or bandanna for smoke and face protection
Leather gloves
Sunglasses and/ or safety glasses
Optional Equipment:
Hand Tools
Fire rake, shovel, flapper, chainsaw
Drip torch
Kestrel pocket weather meter which will measure temperature, wind speed, humidity is valuable to assist with prescribed fire.
ATV or UTV equipped with a water tank and spray wand which is useful in fire line protection and mop up.

Water
Lighter to light test fire and drip torch
Pen or sharpie to mark map reference points and take notes
Lunch or snack
Sunscreen
Bug Spray
Compass
Cell phone
Whistle
